Big Data
Opensourcer MapR has been granted a patent for technology to reliably herd big data. The Hadoop company claims their architecture would safeguard “against data loss with optimized replication techniques and tolerance for multiple node failures in a cluster.” MapR’s patent covers transactional read-write-update semantics with cluster-wide consistency, it provides recovery techniques that “reconciles the divergence of replicated data after node failure.” It spans techniques that allow extreme performance and scale while supporting familiar APIs. The company’s decision to trumpet the patent comes amidst something of a dearth of patents in the big data world — specifically the open-source side.
Today a broad group of stocks related to big data and cloud-based analytics have gotten utterly crushed after Tableau Software reported disappointing earnings and issued soft guidance. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, Tableau was down 48%, Salesforce was down 12%, and Splunk was down 22%. After yesterday’s market close, analytics and business intelligence software provider Tableau Software warned that its fiscal 2016 quarter loss will likely be wider than analysts expect.

Docker/ Containerization
Docker 1.10, the latest version of the software containerization system, addresses one of its most long-standing criticisms. Until now, containers have had to run as root under the Docker daemon, with various hair-raising security implications. The solution is a feature called namespacing. With user namespaces, privileges for the Docker daemon and container are handled separately, so each container can receive its own user-level privileges. Docker has also expanded on user namespaces by providing a plug-in mechanism for authorization. Docker 1.10 also adds major improvements in creating multi container applications and networking.

IoT
It seems that the Internet of Things could force chip makers like Intel to overhaul their chip-making techniques. William Holt, leader of Intel’s technology and manufacturing group, believes that because the chips for IoT devices will need to emphasize energy efficiency rather than speed, chip makers will need to come up with alternatives to silicon chips. “The best pure technology improvements we can make will bring improvements in power consumption but will reduce speed,” said Holt.
Mozilla has decided to exit the realm of smartphone operating systems, and intends to move the focus of Firefox OS to Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The company has decided that in order to succeed in the new area of Connected Devices, it must focus its energy completely on prototyping the future and exploring how to make the biggest impact in IoT.
