Big Data
To finance big data initiatives, businesses need to invest in tools or services such as software or malware. Companies may also need to invest in new staff members which can increase costs dramatically. In order to maximize big data needs on a budget, Huffington Post recommends organizations think about the strategic objectives and the insight they’re looking for from big data, make use of the resources they already have (such as data sources, data storage, data analysis and data output), look for savings on software, and take advantage of big data as a service (BDaaS) with cloud-based services.

Hadoop
Hadoop is in high demand according to the latest earnings report from Hortonworks Inc. Hortonworks is the only Apache Hadoop distribution company that is publicly traded. Its Hadoop distribution competitors, Cloudera and MapR, are both venture-funded companies that don’t publish financial results. Hortonworks’s earnings report comes a week after big data visualization company Tableau spooked Wall Street investors with its quarterly results, which showed significant growth yet disappointed analysts on one key performance indicator — setting off the negative market reaction.

IoT
U.S. Director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said in a statement to the Senate on Tuesdays that intelligence services may use the wide array of IoT devices for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or use credentials. However, a recent study from the Berkman Center for Internet and Society claims these same intelligence agencies could also use IoT devices to illuminate an environment that was previously viewed as “going dark” due to new forms of encryption being used in consumer products and services.
Microsoft’s partnership with HCL Technologies for an Incubation center is hot topic again this week. Microsoft is working with HCL Technologies to drive enterprise adoption of the IoT by leveraging the Azure IoT Suite. eCommerce
B2B buyers are looking for an eCommerce experience that is comparable to buying consumer goods. B2B buyers often make purchases on B2C websites when products are available, so the opportunity to sell to businesses exists for B2C online merchants. Reasons for switching to online purchasing include the convenience of being able to purchase 24 hours a day and the speed of completing the transaction. To make the B2B sale, ecommerce merchants should provide the following:
- Publish detailed relevant content and make sure it is easily accessible for the prospective buyer in all sales channels
- Use graphics and video to showcase products
- Include a live chat feature in case the buyer needs more information — this is more appealing to many buyers than having to talk to a salesperson
- Use tracking, monitoring, and measurement tools. Analyzing buyer behavior can predict conversion as well as repeat purchases and help to make any necessary changes to the buying process.

OpenStack
Today Rackspace announced that it has been certified by Red Hat to manage Red hat OpenStack deployments in data centers. This will allows organizations to deploy OpenStack cloud platforms on-premises around Red Hat’s brand of Enterprise Linux, and hire Rackspace to manage them. However, there is a challenge with this partnership, as anyone selling OpenStack private clouds to enterprises will require a massive install base of VMware and Microsoft software in enterprise data centers.
